The capacity of SS-31 to inhibit the mPTP and cytochrome c release induced by the addition of calcium in isolated liver mitochondria [270], and its ability to protect against the loss of mitochondrial potential, and apoptosis induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide in N2A and SH-SY5Y cells [271], suggests that this antioxidant can be a very interesting therapeutic strategy to treat neuronal damage in ALS, and this needs to be explored in the future
