The effect falls somewhere between a guitar tone control and a wah pedal (the design predates wahs by a good 6 7 years) and is surprisingly effective and distinctive. Jimmy Page used a DeArmond 610 in recording studio session work beginning in the early 1960s. Hank Marvin used one with The Shadows from circa 1965 to the early 70s.
