Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Big Island Kalalau Trail Located on the Southern tipPicture of Punalu'u Black Sand Beach on the Island of Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language Puna luu means "spring [water] diver for". The beach is made of basalt or lava rock giving the sand an amazing black color which is created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools.
