I had never seen the Great Sand Dunes in person, and curiosity pulled me in. It was the middle of winter, brutally cold, and the kind of weather that usually convinces you to keep driving. I stayed anyway. As a storm rolled across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the sky darkened fast. I didnt expect to make a photograph. Sunset was closing
